Me Seeing Me

surprised like a gentle shock
to see myself looking back
over the bright vintage toys
shadow figure in the noise
of colour soft orange hue
is that really you
I think meaning me
a little hard to see
am I sad
am I glad
or just content
to be a part
and not a part
of what childhood meant
outside looking inside looking out
this is no self portrait whisper don’t shout
this is just me seeing me
drawing conclusions framing what I see
the guardians of tradition sporting green
pay homage as they flank two heroes seen
here battle ready ball and hurl in hand
preparing for a final final stand
ceili band versus king of rock and roll
as Elvis battles for our native soul
before his epic effort takes its toll
his sudden and explosive burst for goal
the swivel of the hip
the dip
and drive
oh man alive
he’s vintage too
yet somehow always new
